Collingwood are First Again...

18th November 2001

Matthew Pinsent

Next year's target (?)

On 18th November 2001 Collingwood College Boat Club showed their pioneering spirit again by being the only Durham college to compete in this year's Concept 2 British Indoor Rowing Championships. The event gave people from all over the country and indeed the world a chance to race side by side over 2000m.

Last year's club 2000m record holder Gareth Moyle teamed up with Steve Wood to travel to the event at the indoor arena in Birmingham. After watching Matthew Pinsent and James Cracknell battle it out in a thrilling Mens Open Heavyweight heat, the Collingwood boys were relishing the prospect of racing each other in the U23 Hwt Category.

Indeed the battle was nearly as hard fought as that of Pinsent and Cracknell with Moyle just edging it as both Collingwood rowers finished within a second of each other. "I think my stringent drinking ban might have just given me the edge over that ginger bum-shover" said Moyle in jubilant mood after his 0.6s victory over his former captain. Steve complained of a dry mouth and was reportedly found in Kingsgate within an hour of arriving back in Durham. With both rowers inside the top 100 in the country, both agreed that the event was a big success and that the college should look to return with more competitors next year. Who knows perhaps Castle will show their usual originality and turn up as well.

Inspired by this performance two more of Collingwood's ergomaniacs decided to take on the Durham University 2K indoor rowing challenge. Tom Philips and Rob Wilson both achieved personal bests with Rob being invited to attend the second stage of university winter trials...
