Hatfield Cup

24th-25th November 2001

After only a month of rowing behind them the new members of CCBC battled it out on the river in the now legendary Hatfield Cup. The competition is split into two categories. The first (novice novice) is for those rowers who only began rowing in October; whilst the second (advanced novice) is for those who have not yet lost their novice status.

In the novice novice category Collingwood entered four mens and four womens crews. There were encouraging performances from both squads, especially one men's boat which reached the quarter finals of the Hatfield Cup, and the women's crew who reached their loser's plate final before being edged out to finish as runners-up.

The advanced novice crews were feeling confident as they entered the weekend, and they had every right to. Both the top men's and women's crews came home in first place, despite unfounded rumours circulating that some of the rowers were not actually novices.

Last year the crash of the year had to go to Andy Benson's crew for their spectacular impact under Baths Bridge. This year - to Bob's relief - the top collision did not include a Collingwood boat. Crews from Mildert and Hild Bede swapped stations shortly after the start, but then when passing the Bede landing stage some aggressive coxing caused one crew to end up sideways across the river (see above). The crews were lined up again for a 100m crawl to Baths. The result isn't important.
