Henley Training Camp

24th-26th September 2001

Temple IslandJust over a year since Collingwood qualified for the Britannia Challenge Cup of Henley Royal Regatta, CCBC returned to the Thames at Henley. This time it was not to compete in the Royal Regatta, but to get in some pre-term training ahead of a new year on the Wear.

Based at Upper Thames Rowing Club, with boats and blades borrowed from Regents Park College, Oxford, the lads of CCBC pushed off into the perfect conditions afforded by the regatta course at Henley. Aided by former College Principle and DUBC coach Gerald Blake, the squad rowed from Leander past Temple Island for three very long days.

As the rowing improved, so did the morale amongst the crews. Of course, whilst it was a training camp, the lads (and Katherine) were not prevented from enjoying themselves. On the final night the squad descended on the town for a meal and later a visit to Henley's premier nightspot - Latinos (!?!) before returning the hard wooden floor of Rememham Parish Hall. Allegedly this hard surface straightens your back and then improves your technique in the boat?

SquadOn the final day even cox Katherine "Maverick" Murray rowed, although the other seven people did reduce their stroke to half slide. The rowing was good, the atmosphere was better; and it was surely a training camp that will set CCBC up for another good year in Durham and around the country.
