Durham City Regatta

11-12th May 2002

Leading DUBC in Senior 2 Coxed IVs final As the regatta season began the people of CCBC sent a warning shot across the bows of their fellow competitors.

Most Collingwood entries were to be found on the saturday, which gave Captain Rob Pillar a bit of a headache when it came to boat allocations (possibly a bigger headache then the forthcoming exams). Collingwood picked up a massive haul of five wins on the day. The first came for men's 2nd IV who beat off a strong Hull University crew. The race seemed close as the crews passed Baths Bridge, but when they crossed the line a Collingwood win was confirmed. Next up was the women's 1st IV, now once again under the control of Robin Collings (who picked up wins in the single and double sculls). After wins against DARC, and a great row to finish off the challenge of the DUBC Freshwomen they were left with St Peters school in the final. The girls rowed magnificently, and pegged up their first regatta win, which will surely not be their last. Finally after having their final moved back an hour, the men's 1st IV were to face Northumbria University - the crew who beat Castle in the semi-finals. The Collingwood crew had been improving throughout the day, and this continued in the final where they finished with clear water to take the senior 3 prize. The women's 2nd IV was unlucky not to reach the final of the novice event, but they will be back stronger for Durham Regatta. Unfortunately there were no wins by either novice squad, but they produced some excellent results against University crews who more often then not pitted plastic against our mostly wooden fleet.

Sunday was a much quieter day by the river, but the men's 1st IV managed to rouse some noise from the crowd by holding 3/4 of a length on a DUBC crew. Unfortunately DUBC came back at them to take the senior 2 win by a canvas. However, all who saw the race were made to sit up and take notice that CCBC mean business. Later in the day another Collingwood crew took on the uni, this time it was Julian Steeds and Ian Slingsby in their newly formed novice pair. Again though the uni took the spoils.
