Tyne at Home Regatta
8th June 2002
The Tyne is known by most Collingwood rowers for it's freezing cold 5.5km head race held in the middle of winter. But this year the CCBC men's 1st IV visited it's annual regatta, held over a much shorter distances (thankfully!).
Originally entered for S2 and S1 4+, the S1 race became Elite as there was no opposition in S1. The regatta secretary informed the crew that they would have to race the only club in the north-east with an elite crew - DUBC, and that they were either mad or extremely fit. Before the encounter with the university there was the small matter of the S2 final against a Berwick/Cambois composite crew. After an eventful start the crew quickly got themselves back together to record a comfortable win.
Then came another meeting with the DUBC crew which had narrowly beaten them in S2 4+ on the Sunday of Durham City. A powerful start saw Collingwood take a narrow lead, which they maintained until the 1000m mark - where the lead was half a length. This time CCBC were determined not to be rowed down and in the last 200m took clear water to the delight of the crowds on the bank; recording what is thought to be Collingwood's first ever Elite victory.
