Socials - Boatclub Barbecue 2001

10th June 2001

Plans began early for what promised to be a spankingly good post exam lash-up, apparently contravening the university's policy on alcohol abuse (hoorah)! The only thing that could ruin the evening was if the rain that had graced us for most of the week continued. Luckily, the big man upstairs stepped in just in time to ensure that spirits were not dampened and the cocktails were not watered down! The fine weather enabled the planed 'DJ on the roof' option to be taken and the scene was set for a night of "mental mental chicken oriental". The mood relaxed as the revellers soon began to take advantage of Oli and Sam's generous £7 all you can drink offer.

As the party men and women of Collingwood graced the scene (which took the form of the Hild Bede grounds), the blissful Balearic beats conditioned the air and lubricated their thirst. Tasks were set with CCBC's only hard-line T-totaller Rob 'el capitano' Collings taking on the role as chief fire starter, furnishing us all with his crisp yet juicy meat. Sam and Oli had also vowed to stay dry for the evening although one failed miserably, running to Klute as the party finished and the clearing up began to offer his own unique dessert to the ladies of Durham. They salute/pity you Sam.

Concerns began to arise as to whether the cocktails were meeting the required level of potency when one fiery haired young filly complained that she wanted something much more powerful (we unleashed Sam!). Although revenge is a dish best served cold, in this case it was served up with bottles of Russia's finest throat burning Vodka! Ha ha ha! The other concern as to the drinks became clear when Cookie and his merry band of agony aunts arrived and quickly commandeered their own jug of Balearic happiness juice normally enough to kill a small horse (a foal). The enviable drinking capacities of these and many others (Justine and Sarah) was counter balanced by the few T-totallers who paid seven quid for all you can drink soft drinks. The organisers and the CCBC treasurer thank you for your financial naivety.

The evening grew and grew to a flame grilled climax when the traditional boat race to the 'offy' ensued. This was successfully accomplished by Bob, Steve, Oli, James and Abi, winners of Novice Coxed IVs from the Saturday of Durham Regatta. By the end of what was undoubtedly one of the highlights of collingwood's social calendar everybody seemed happy (or at least too pissed to complain).

It would not be fair to report on the BBQ without mentioning everybody's favourite boat mechanic 'Bob the boatman' who was seen in the early hours of the morning (having been turned away from Klute) running towards the now deserted boathouse in search of his college meal card! Never has it been known for a man to be so keen on his college nosh. This act of idiocy was soon surpassed by his ludicrously intimate antics with an item of street furniture.

All that remains to be said is a big thanks to all those who attended and helped out including members of the boat club - Andy, Pistol, Alex, Rach, Robin, Si, Luke and not forgetting the one and only Pedro 'Balearic beats with an eclectic mix of cheese' Sanchez.
